Frequently Asked Questions
Why World of Warcraft?
Our team has been working on U.GG since 2018 and, as LoL players, we've become reliant on using our tools to make our experiences better in-game. As our team expanded over the years, we've collected passionate teammates who want similar experiences while playing other games outside of League of Legends. One of those games that the team is passionate about is World of Warcraft. Our goal for U.GG in WoW is the same as in LoL - Bring you the absolute best builds (and talents!) in WoW so you can clear content easier, faster, and have the most fun while doing so.
Where does the data come from?
All of our data comes from the Warcraftlogs API - shout out to their team for all the hard work they do for each major WoW update!
What data are you looking at?
For PVE content, We are crawling the top rankings pages for both Mythic+ and the current raid on both the Heroic and Mythic difficulty. In addition to this ranking page crawl, we also are crawling the top log entries for each spec on each encounter or dungeon to ensure there is enough data for lower represented specs.
How are spec tiers calculated?
A spec's tier is determined with an algorithm, which takes into account their DPS or HPS as well as popularity of the spec in the top rankings of the Mythic+ or Raid to assign the spec a tier that displays how performant that spec is during each WoW patch.
Why the DPS metric for Tanks?
Unlike DPS and Healer classes, tanks are unique in that it's more difficult to quantify metrics each tank cares about when comparing one tank to another. Some tank specs have better mitigation than others, while other tank specs outshine the rest in their self-healing abilities. We're currently searching for better metrics to measure and rank tank specs against each other and would love to hear your feedback on what you value as a tank player. In the meantime, we're using the DPS metric while putting a bit more weight on the popularity metric in our tanking tier list algorithms.
Where's the PvP data and filters?
We're focusing on Raid and Mythic+ data for our initial release, but we are considering and thinking about meaningful ways we could provide data for PvP players. If you have any suggestions or feedback we'd love to hear it!
Why do some specs have such low sample sizes in Mythic+?
We're only able to pull data from the top players completing M+ dungeons. If a spec has low representation in timing and completing the highest keys, there won't be much data to aggregate on. To compensate for this, we're additionally crawling each spec's top ranking pages for each encounter to provide a larger sample size to make recommendations. This additional crawl data is not reflected or used on the tier list pages, but only on the individual spec pages.
What's next?
We have plans to include simulation data to aid our recommendations, more filters (including filtering by Affixes for Mythic+), rotation and opener suggestions, higher sample sizes and more parses for lower represented specs, and some other exciting features and data to make your journey in World of Warcraft more enjoyable!
