Movement speed counters Aatrox. Grabbing an early Ninja Tabi further cements an laning advantage, helping you dodge Aatrox's unreliable cc and reduce his damage output.

Aatrox is countered by crowd control. His tankiness is built into his self heal, which relies on him doing damage to enemies. If you are able to cc him at the beginning of a fight, he is much easier to burst.

Range counters Aatrox. At early levels, Aatrox's is on a long cooldown. The cc on his is unreliable, and when his is down, he is easy to kite and take winning trades against.

Aatrox is countered by anti-heal. Investing 800g into an early Executioner's Calling could be the difference between winning and losing a trade.

Minions counter Aatrox. Aatrox's does not pass through minions. If you keep a minion between you and Aatrox, he will not be able to land his full combo.

Aatrox counters you if you move in a straight line. Aatrox's abilities are not targeted and can be dodged by adding in the occasional change in direction in your movement pattern. Dodging his first knockup or his will greatly reduce Aatrox's damage output.
