Final Board Setup

This a standard leveling composition where you need to roll on key intervals (3-2, 4-2, and 5-2) for upgraded carries and eventually cap out your board around legendary units.

Vertical Umbral can often win games because the trait gives you a lot of rewards and items in the late game and it’s not uncommon to get 8 Umbral since the Umbral Emblem is craftable. There are several units that can use the Umbral Emblem well, such as Kayn, Morgana, and Azir.

Early Game

The ideal Umbral start is either with AP items and 1* Alune through an orb drop, or with hybrid AP / Bruiser items and 2* Darius. Umbral shielding is quite strong in the early game, so it is common to streak throughout Stage 2 and 3 if you manage to find key upgrades.

Mid Game

If you are behind on HP and board strength on Stage 3-2, you can roll deep for upgraded 2 and 3 cost Umbral units. If Alune is uncontested, then you can stay on Level 7 and roll for Alune 3* on 3-5 or 4-1. Otherwise, you can default to playing strongest board every turn, then roll down for your upgraded board on Stage 4-2 (Level 8).

Almost every 4 cost frontline can fit on this board, so be sure to hold them on your rolldown and play flexibly around whatever you upgrade first. Alune 2* is a must have by Stage 4-2.

Late Game

Focus on building up economy and then roll on important intervals (4-5, 5-1, or 5-5) for upgraded 4 costs and supporting units. After getting key units upgraded, look to push level 9 and 10 for legendaries.

Pro Tip: If you have Umbral emblems, only play 8 Umbral for a couple of turns to farm items, then slowly switch out weaker Umbral units with upgraded 4 and 5 cost units for a stronger capped board.
