Understanding how the armor system works is a critical part of playing the game. The size, shape, and weak spots vary greatly enemy to enemy.
Terminid weak points tend to be their legs, particularly with Brood Commanders where their head is Light (2), and their legs are Unarmored.
Automaton weak points are almost always the head, or a rear glowing vent on the heavier enemy types, such as Hulks and Tanks.
Armor Penetration
Enemy Armor in the game is divided into 10 different levels, and Unarmored.
For example, if you want to pierce medium armor, you need Medium Armor Penetrating Rounds.
The developers refer to this as Armor Piercing (AP) ≥ Armor Value (AV).
There are currently 10 AVs in the game, but no enemies go past AV (6).

Visual Hitmarkers
When you land a shot on an enemy, you’ll see a hitmarker. The hitmarker depending on the color or icon will let you know whether you’re dealing damage to the enemy.
Ricochets (AP < AV)
If you take a shot at an enemy that has a higher armor value than your current weapon. a blue flash will appear, and your projectile will bounce off. A little ricochet icon will appear, as seen below.
Example Light Round -> Heavy Armor
This means your weapon is doing no damage.

White Hitmarker (AP = AV)
Hitting a target where your weapon armor penetration matches their armor level, you will see a WHITE hitmarker.
Example Light Round -> Light Armor
This means your weapon is doing 50% of its total damage per shot.

Red Hitmarker (AP > AV)
Hitting a target where your weapon armor penetration exceeds their armor level, you will see a RED hitmarker.
Example Light Round -> Unarmored
This means your weapon is doing 100% of its total damage per shot.
